Thank you to all who responded with suggestions.

Derek Diget pegged the problem.

This system is a gateway to the remote management
of our network equipment and a switch command was
executed on the Solaris box.

Do you have any network admins with root privs on this box?  Do they use

this box to manage their equipment?  If so, they probably issued a
"hostname SWITCH-NAME" in Solaris when they thought they were on the
switch.

To fix it, try doing a "hostname `cat /etc/nodename`" and reset dtlogin.
