It seems like the path of least resistence is to up the start up script in either /etc/rc2.d or /etc/ rc3.d which seems reasonable to me. Several others said I need to creaete an svcs profile and then have it started by svcadm. I was also referred to http://www.sunfreeware.com/sshsol10.html and http://www.sunfreeware.com/sshsol10.html for info about SMF and how to set this up vis svcs and svcadm. The advantage over just putting a startup script in /etc/rc2.d or /etc/ rc3.d is that it gives you more control over the ssh service; however, this is control that I do not need at this time. One person asked why I don't use the bult-in ssh that comes with Solaris 10? The primary reason is, after spending a good solid day on setting it up, neither me nor my manager were able to get it to work properly, so we decided to go with Open SSH which is more current anyway. Other than the start up question, Open SSH 4.7 works great on our T2000. Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. Your answers were all very helpful. _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers at sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers From ahoesch at smartsoft.de Wed Dec 5 16:08:59 2007 From: ahoesch at smartsoft.de (=?ISO-8859-1?Q?Andreas_H=F6schler?=) Date: Wed, 5 Dec 2007 22:08:59 +0100 Subject: Summary: dtlogin to new Solaris server In-Reply-To: <20071128005353.GA27865@SDF.LONESTAR.ORG> Message-ID: <4C677E2E-A376-11DC-99B9-000393CA0072@smartsoft.de> Dear managers, thanks to all responders. >> Obviously a good question since I got no answer so far that helped. >> Thanks anyway to all that responded. The overall consensus is that a reboot will get the extra flags on the metadb output showing up as expected. But the system is not performing in a degraded state until you reboot. So in other words, don't reboot because of this, wait until you were going to do a reboot for some other reason. Original question: Hello Sunmanagers, I recently added another mirrored slice d4, with submirrors d14 and d24 to one of our systems with SVM. I created this slice and another slice for meta-database replicas on untouched drives in the server. At the end of the process I added the metadb replicas to there slices like so: metadb -a -c 3 c0t2d0s7 c4t2d0s7 This worked fine but when I do a metadb -i they show up without some of the flags. Specifically these: p - replica's location was patched in kernel l - locator for this replica was read successfully o - replica active prior to last mddb configuration change Though they have the 'a' and 'u' flags. See output below. My question is why? Is this something I need to worry about? How do I get the replica's location patched in the kernel, etc.. Basically, cables were ok, and it was a combination of two problems: 1) As Brad said, the controller... one of the 3 controllers on the machine was broken, and after checking everything we manage to find the issues there, isolate it, and voila! no more errors. 2) condensation on the back of the server... really odd, but it looks like at the back of the server there was some tiny little drops of water, we checked everything and nothing was leaking, nor dripping liquid... then we saw that the server is installed on a communcation rack with a solid door at the front (air-flow on the V240 is from the front to the back). We dismounted the front door, and magic! no more condensation... It seems to be working now... but this is one I won't forget easily... Cheers and thanks to everyone! Pablo.-. *Forwarded Conversation* Subject: *SCSI Bus Transition* ------------------------ * From: Pablo Jejcic* To: sunmanagers at sunmanagers.org Date: 2 December 2007 20:07 Hi Gurus, I need some confirmation... I'm troubleshooting a remote server: SunFire V240 + D2 JB. We have 2 RAID 5 configured on the server. Everything was working fine until we moved the box to the server room into a controlled environment... now 2-3 times a week, we get the following set of errors: WARNING: /pci at 1d,700000/pci at 1/scsi at 4 (qus0): SCSI Bus Transition WARNING: /pci at 1d,700000/pci at 1/scsi at 4 (qus0): Received unexpected SCSI Reset Then a few hours after we get the warnings, we loose the disks, the RAIDs, everything on the external array.... My guesses here: 1- Problem with the termination of the SCSI chain - the D2 have automatic terminators, but I'm guessing some problem with them can be causing this. 2- Problems with the SCSI cables, some of the pins, or something is wrong, and they might be a bit loose, with the vibration from the storoage array the pop out, and we start getting the issues. 3- SCSI controller issues... but I don't understand how this could be the cause as the errors should be more frequent, or they should be there all the time. 4- a couple fo the disks on one of the pictures I got of the array look that they don't have the "cover" on (the tray to slot them into the array)... so they might be moving... but why all the other ones go off? The server is in a very humid environment, but we moved it into the data centre because we thought that the A/C will help to reduce the problem... but it just made it worse. A/C both cools and dehumidifies. I do not believe there is any issue with not having the cover on the case. It is purely decorational. I would suspect the cables first, since they are easily replaced. Do you have someone who can support the machines in this remote site? I would have him or her replace all of the SCSI cables. Special thanks to Casper from Sun who was really fast, plus some others hit the problem on the head (Paul Piraino, Rafael Angarita, Brett Lymn, Ketan Patel). When running fsck across the system, the result was that there were 0 blocks free, despite there being 181Mb free. This caused the file system full condition that I saw. The only solution was to move the data to another partition, newfs the existing partition, and move the data back. First of all, I want to shoot down the concept of using expect with ssh - I had used this as a quick and dirty way to check the date command over multiple systems after the DST changes earlier in the year, and started doing metastat checks from my desktop with a similar method. We normally never do that. ssh public keys are the way to go for any scripted commands from the ssh family. Someone emailed me a copy of metacheck - a script name I find both on open source and from Sun, although the one I was emailed was from Sun. It seems the best. The solution I was looking for is documented at Sun. Here one can find information on using mdmonitord for Solaris 10. The Sun resource also lists a copy of the Sun metacheck script which can be set up nicely to email from each host doing the check if Solaris is 9 and under. Some people suggested SNMP for monitoring, and that is mentioned at this Sun Volume Manager Admin Guide as well: http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-4520/tasks-snmp-1?a=view I will ditch the ssh + remote command concept and implement Sun's metacheck on older Solaris boxes as this is the most thorough solution. _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers at sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers From banal at rhythm.com Thu Dec 20 15:00:06 2007 From: banal at rhythm.com (Chris Banal) Date: Thu, 20 Dec 2007 12:00:06 -0800 Subject: SUMMARY: X4500 e-mail alerts (part 2) In-Reply-To: <47685329.1070406@rhythm.com> References: <47630ABD.4000802@rhythm.com> <47685329.1070406@rhythm.com> Message-ID: <476AC9C6.8090707@rhythm.com> Sun Managers, After exchanging a few e-mails with Doug Hughes who replied to my summary. I was inspired to try snmp traps despite being told by a Sun engineer that the X4500 ILOM did not produce traps for disk events. This isn't quite what I was looking for but it will "do the trick" (tm). Using NET-SNMP's snmptrapd I was able to setup snmp traps and the X4500 sent traps which were converted to e-mails on drive disconnections and unconfigurations. I am by no means a snmptrapd expert but the following info should help others get started if they run into the same issue I did. - NET-SNMP comes with snmptrapd and a script called traptoemail which produces e-mails from traps. The following config file sets up a default trap handler to send e-mails demo:~> cat snmptrapd.conf ########################################################################### # # snmptrapd.conf # # - created by the snmpconf configuration program # ########################################################################### # SECTION: Trap Handlers # # Here we define what programs are run when a trap is # received by the trap receiver. # traphandle: When traps are received, a program can be run. # When traps are received, the list of configured trap # handles is consulted and any configured program is run. # If no handler is found, any handler with "default" as the # traphandle type is run instead. I reinstalled the additional RAM, the problem still did not occur again. I reinstalled the SCSI-card and all seems fine now. May be one of the memory cards did not have enough electrical contact to the motherboard. The installation is running now. The weird and a bit annoying part (though no problem in my special case) is that after installing the SCSI-Adaptor the device paths have changed. Normally the two firewire disks in a SF 280R are c1t0d0 c1t1d0 Now the installation routines shows these disks at c4t0d0 c4t1d0 As mentioned that's no problem in my case since I am reinstalling the os anyway, but doesn't that mean that installing a SCSI-card in a system breaks an existing os installation? I assume disksuite prefers cXt0d0 for the mirrored disks not to change!? Thanks a lot! Second, and this is why I've rearranged the contents of the disk to make room for the man pages, Solaris 7 does include DHCP functionality, as in ifconfig le0 dhcp up or ifconfig hme0 dhcp up or whatever the appropriate network interface happens to be. Provided there's a functional DHCP server available, that should work (and it certainly appears to for me). Third, the ISC (http://www.isc.org/) maintains a reference DHCP implementation that's available in source code form from their site. As I've discovered, this is useful not only if you need to use DHCP, but if you need to understand some of the fine points about how it works. Fourth, there's a useful page of notes/tips here: http://www.rite-group.com/rich/solaris_dhcp.html that explains some of the nuances of using DHCP with Solaris.
