Prabir suggested to remove and re-attach the disk in the following way: - with luxadm/cfgadm remove the disk from both the nodes one after other. - run devfsadm -C, devfsadm on both nodes, scdidadm -r on either node. - with cfgadm configure the disk back on both the nodes. - run devfsadm -C, devfsadm on both nodes, scdidadm -r on either node. I removed the disk with cfgadm -c unconfigure, devfsadm + scdidadm, and voila, it went away! Unfortunately, I was unable to add it back with cfgadm, so, Prabir suggested a reconfigure boot which did the trick. The disk came back as did/d9 on both nodes, and I was able to add it to diskset and build the metadevices etc. Thanks again, and have a nice hackin', Harald Hi gurus, I've got a Sun cluster consisting of two X4200 and two SE3310, running Sol10 x86 and SC3.1 U4, patch rev. is EIS-DVD 12/06. I have defined two LUNs on each SE 3310, and I'd like to map them to two disksets, one called "log-dg" and the other one called "ora-dg". The problem is, that I can't add the second "disk" to the diskset "ora-dg", since SVM complains that this drive is not common with the other host. But, I'm quite sure it is, format etc. shows the drive, and even scdidadm -L shows it without any problems. One further information: When I first booted the machines, the storages had a different configuration, and I re-configured them. After this, the disk in question showed up as d9 on node 1, and as d11 on node 2 - not very nice for a shared device, so, since I was unable to get rid of this mappings (even a reconfigure boot after completely disconnecting the storages helped), I booted up the nodes in non-cluster mode and edited /dev/cluster/ccr/did_instances by hand. That helped, after this and a devfsadm && scdidadm -r, the drive shows up as d9 on both nodes, as I expected. But, see above, the cluster still thinks these are different drives (although did_instances seems to be okay). Any clues? Message-ID: Well, yes AND no... but firstly: "thanks" to Marius Sicoie, Roland Merk, and Robert Murray who kindly advised me that they were "Out of Office", and specially to Postmaster at aubay.it who advised me my email was spam. ;-) Genuine thanks to John Julian and Mike Adams for their helpful answers and Special Thanks to Darren Dunham for the golden answer that sorted the whole issue. (and therefore is owed the case of Dr Pepper!) To summarise: The addition of files before compat in the nsswitch.conf search order is accepted and honoured but should NOT be necessary on a "neatly" configured Solaris box. Quite simply (in the case of /etc/passwd & related lookups) with the "compat" setting the file /etc/passwd is ALWAYS going to be read but my problem came because the ORDER is important. Sounds obvious to me now, but the lines in the /etc/passwd file will be checked in the order in which they are encountered. So, if the DB tokens (i.e. the "+@:x:::::" entries in /etc/passwd) that refer to NIS-netgroup-style entries are found BEFORE a line containing the local "files" configuration they will be checked before those lines later in the file. In my case I had some lines in /etc/passwd like this type: + at ldn-ops:x::::: BEFORE lines specifically like this: oracle:x:1019:100:oracle user:/export/home/oracle:/bin/ksh and that was the cause of the constant LDAP searching. The adding of "files" before compat worked because it forces the /etc/passwd file to be read first as a "plain" file (non-Nis-style) before "compat" reads it again in the NIS-compatible manner. Therefore the answer is; it's honoured, it works, it temporarily fixed my problem but it's a bit of a fudge and ideally isn't necessary if the order in /etc/passwd is "correct" by having all the DB tokens at the end. I asked: --- > My question 'Is "passwd: files compat" a valid configuration in > nsswitch.conf?' relates to a couple of things that made me ask this: > On a Solaris 9 server (LDAP client) I recently experienced a very heavy > load from the client to the LDAP server. By Adding the windows portion, we call the operating system Solaris. However, be careful: Many people refer to SunOS as the older SunOS 4.X releases, while referring to SunOS 5.X when saying Solaris. In fact Solaris 1.X refers to SunOS 4.X plus windows (OpenWin) environments. Likewise, Solaris 2.X refers to SunOS 5.X plus windows environment (which has changes between OpenWIn, CDE etc). However, after Solaris 2.6, the 2. was dropped and we started using Solaris 7, Solaris 8 etc. This coincided with the 32 to 64 bit transition. In summary for SunOS 5.X: ========================= SunOS 5.1 + GUI = Solaris 2.1 SunOS 5.2 + GUI = Solaris 2.2 ... SunOS 5.6 + GUI = Solaris 2.6 SunOS 5.7 + GUI = Solaris 7 .... Short answer is that since 2.5.1 and 2.6 are past EOL, I can pay sun $150K to provide me with patches, or make the mods myself using: /usr/sbin/zic on latest timezone tables downloaded from www.nih.gov . This is supposed to be fairly straightforward. Supposedly a Solaris 7 patch may actually be out there yet, as it's reaching EOL in 2007. It was also noted that these OS are very old, and really should be updated - understood, but due to complicated circumstances probably won't happen, definitely won't happen before March 26th. Sigh... The general consensus, from all but one person, was that Kingston (and maybe Crucial) RAM was the way to go. It works. Get a sales rep from Kingston or some hardware reseller, and they will get you some good deals, and match the RAM as close as possible to the Sun part numbers. Slight variances in speed/etc aren't a problem, except maybe if you run SunVTS on the machine. And of course Sun will not give you hardware support until you remove the 3rd party RAM. :) -Charlie _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers at sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers From Andre.Hilgers at mobilcom.de Tue Jan 9 00:35:59 2007 From: Andre.Hilgers at mobilcom.de (Andre Hilgers) Date: Tue, 9 Jan 2007 06:35:59 +0100 Subject: SUMMARY: Solaris 10 Zones in different networks: How? I have a T2000 with two networkinterfaces. Each Networkinterface is in a different network: ipge0 = 10.36.128.153/24 ipge2 = 10.35.182.54/24 I have three zones, the global zone plus two other zones: zone1 and zone2. The global zone and zone1 are members in the first network with ip 10.36.128.153/24 and 10.36.128.114/24 and zone2 is member in the second network with ip 10.35.182.64/24. If I configure /etc/defaultrouter in the global zone with 10.36.128.1 the zone zone2 can not communicate in its network. Zone1 has no problems and I can see with netstat that zone1 has a defaultroute, zone2 does not have a defaultroute. If I add a second defaultroute in the global zone with `route add default 10.35.182.11` I can see now two defaultroutes with netstat -r. Zone2 has now a defaulroute too and can communicate with its network. Is this a correct way? Or do we get some problems with the two defaultroutes in the global zone? Do somebody know how the official way is to configure Zones in different networks? I will summarize! Thanks! The problem is that the client went offline rather abruptly (was not shutdown gracefully) while some connections were in ESTABLISHED state. That meant that the client never sent a "FIN" to initiate closing of the connections. When that happens then connections can stay in ESTABLISHED state on the server for days. The only other way to close these connections is to make the server application send a CLOSE which can be accomplished by restarting the server process (which was not done in order to investigate this problem). My original problem was: I have a Solaris 10 LDAP server which is showing "ESTABLISHED" connections on the LDAP port from a client. I am *absolutely* sure and have verified that the client has not connected to the server in the last three days. The "ESTABLISHED" connections have been there for the last 3 days when the client last connected. No i have not restarted the LDAP process. I want to get to the bottom of these phantom connections before i restart LDAP and possibly lose the symptom. Why is netstat reporting established TCP connection when they are not actually there? Anybody seen this before? I would like to add some add'l details to the summary. 1. Details on timezone tables: "In the tz database's FTP distribution the code is in the file tzcodeC.tar.gz, where C is the code's version; similarly, the data are in tzdataD.tar.gz, where D is the data's version. The following shell commands download these files to a GNU/Linux or similar host; see the downloaded README file for what to do next. wget 'ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub/tz*.tar.gz' gzip -dc tzcode*.tar.gz | tar -xf - gzip -dc tzdata*.tar.gz | tar -xf - The code lets you compile the tz source files into machine-readable binary files, one for each location. It also lets you read a tz binary file and interpret time stamps for that location." The above quote is from: http://www.twinsun.com/tz/tz-link.htm The words "FTP distribution" in first sentence are link to: ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub/ There's a file: tzdata2007a.tar.gz on that page that appears to have the timezone files. I am guessing this may be what the respondent was thinking about. I'm not sure how to use them, but hopefully that should be self evident on examination. 2. Version-specific patch info: Solaris 10 - I don't have the info yet Solaris 9 - requires 113225-03 or later and 112874-33 or later Solaris 8 - requires 109810-02 or later and 108993-52 or later Solaris 7 - may be available online, though OS reaches EOL in 2007 Solaris 2.6 and earlier - will have to rebuild from timezone data tables at www.nih.gov using "zic" 3. A correspondent got the following info from Sun technical support about whether you could rely on NTP to handle the timezone change (no), and whether you absolutely had to reboot after timezone patches are installed (yes): "NTP uses UTC, universal time coordinated. It knows nothing about Time Zones, which are an env variable. Ramifications are unknown and no one wanted to speculate. According to this Sun Alert: Document Audience: PUBLIC Document ID: 102775 Title: Daylight Saving Time (DST) Changes for Australia (2006), Canada (2007), United States (2007) and Others Update Date: Wed Jan 17 00:00:00 MST 2007 'There is no easy way to avoid this issue. Attempts to change the TOD clock of the system are temporary and will not resolve all the time zone issues resolved by these patches. It is advised that the patches are installed to resolve the time zone changes.' When I asked around about this, I was told that we recommend that the time zone patches be installed, regardless of the presence/absence of NTP. If problems do occur, installing the DST patch/patches will be necessary. Sigh... Note: If the value is raised above the current usage level, users will be unable to allocate files until enough files have been deleted to get under the higher threshold. " And from http://leaf.dragonflybsd.org/cgi/web-man?command=tunefs§ion=8 : -m minfree .... Settings of 5% and less force space optimization to always be used which will greatly increase the overhead for file writes. .... -o space | time The filesystem can either try to minimize the time spent allocat- ing blocks, or it can attempt to minimize the space fragmentation on the disk. Optimization for space has much higher overhead for file writes. The kernel normally changes the preference automat- ically as the percent fragmentation changes on the filesystem. So I will leave the minfree default 10% for performance reasons. Thanks a lot. I have a Fujitsu-Siemens PrimePower 450 running a Solaris 8. I've ran to a slight trouble with vxvm and I'd need to boot the server from cd. I've obtained the Solaris8 02/04 cd (multi_icd_sol_8_204_sparc) However when I try to boot from the cd I get: {0} ok boot cdrom Boot device: /pci at 83,4000/ide at d/cdrom at 0,0:f File and args: boot: cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix Enter filename [kernel/sparcv9/unix]: On one forum I found that I should get a Sol8 cd from Fujitsu. Is it true that the "default" Sol8 cd is no good with Fujitsu servers? There's nothing for sun4us on the cd either. Of course, this is my first time booting the server from cd so I'm not exactly sure about the procedure either. In detail what happened with the server (if you might have any other idea how to make the server boot again) is that we installed the veritas volume manager trial version and decided to apply it only on the FC disks. Trial version means that the vxvm will fail at boot without the license key. Being in a horrible hurry to install Oracle (that goes on the system disks) I needed to reboot the server regardless and thought to tap in the license key later as I wouldn't need the FC disks yet. I had instructed the installer to leave the system disks alone (under DiskSuite) and only apply the vxvm for the FC disks. However this seemed not to be the case and some system disks (like usr) went under the control of the vxvm. Thus, at reboot, the system disks were not available. Any ideas and comments would be most welcome! Forgot to mention that the server is an NFS-server but only a few clients were accessing their NFS-mounts at the time... Comments / suggestions: 1) In Solaris 10, iowait is no longer measured and will be reported as zero by existing tools. Since iowait was always a variant of idle time, this makes no difference to usr or sys time. iowait was always a confusing and useless metric, which is why it was removed. 2) Volume layout As some of you pointed out, there is no point in having striped layout on a volume already beeing configured as RAID5 on the disk controller. This slows down the IO. Unfortunaltely, I haven't had the opportunity to recreate these volumes using Veritas concat layout but all new volumes on other disk boxes are using this layout. We're seeing higher I/O throughput on these. 2) Tools to find more info about disk activity vxstat (fex. vxstat -i 5 - c 10 -g smoddg) sar (fex. sar 3 10) prstat (fex. prsize -t size) top (have a look at picdl's size. May require a patch if size is large) Conclusion: None. Yet. My server is still spending much time in iowait. However, after having rebooted all clients the iowait number became significantly lower. Could be that one of the clients messed up big time... I plan to change the volume layout when we're upgrading to a new disk box. Thanks to all that replied! Brad, Don, Chad, Gordon, Jim, Tim, Thomas, Darren and Richard. Basically I think my problem was down to taking out the disks a little too often which in turn put my submirrors on my mirror disk in the state of "need maintenance" which when I detached, cleared, re-initialised, reattached and synced with the other submirror allowed me to reboot from mirror once again with the root disk pulled out. This time my submirrors residing on my root disk were reading a "need maintenance" status but are fixable using the previously mentioned proceedure. The reason this threw me was that I didn't believe this would resolve the issue seeing that once both disks were in place I could boot back and forth between root disk and mirror without any problems. I think the moral of the story is not to be pulling disks out too often and expecting nothing to be affected. This is in the middle of a tight > outage schedule for DST patches. > > If anyone knows any magic, let me know. Well, we never did get the serial console back. In the end we applied the RSC packages, switched the input-device and output-device in the OBP, and configured a user, so that the RSC became our working console. It's now looking like the actual serial port may be dead on the system board. Special thanks to Sun's support line for ONCE AGAIN screwing up our contract information, and telling us that this machine is on a cancelled contract (It's not). Here's a summary of all of the excellent suggestions which unfortunately didn't work in our case: 1) Restart the ttymon daemon. I failed to mention that this problem was consistent at the OBP as well as the running OS, and persisted through a reboot. 2) Check the input-device and output-device. They were set to keyboard and screen respectively, which should (and did--and does on our other v880s) drop down to ttya in the absence of said devices. 3) Check the tty settings. They were still at the bog-standard 9600/8/N/1, as was the console server. 4) Try another port on the console server. Did that, didn't help. 5) Try ttyb. Didn't do that at all, as I'd need a splitter cable or at the least a custom pin-out adaptor. 6) Plug in a keyboard and monitor, and reset. Did that, and ended up getting garbage on the screen, no response from the keyboard, nothing at all on the serial console, and a machine that wouldn't boot! Truly bizarre... 7) Check the cables, adaptors, etc. Replaced everything in the chain except for the actual system board, all to no avail. At this point, we have a console via the RSC, and also a significantly updated OBP firmware. I believe we're going to kill ttymon and test the ttya serial port, and then get Sun in to fix the hardware if that's what turns out to be the issue. Thanks for the help folks. The unanimous answer is that a reboot is required to implement the new DST. Also, Darren added these comments: If you do not reboot, only new processes will see the new timezone files. Any process that was launched before the patches will have the old data in memory. So, if you have something like Oracle, you'd need to restart it, and in some cases that's just about as hard as rebooting. Original questiion: Can support for the new DST be implemented without a reboot, as directed in patch 109809-04? ________________________________________________________________________ Check Out the new free AIM(R) Mail -- 2 GB of storage and industry-leading spam and email virus protection. _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers at sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers From vincent.bolay at medtronic.com Wed Jan 24 04:43:35 2007 From: vincent.bolay at medtronic.com (Bolay, Vincent) Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2007 10:43:35 +0100 Subject: SUMMARY: Netapp takeover issue Message-ID: I finally found that /kernel/drv/lpfc.conf was misconfigured. EST From: "JESSE CARROLL" To: Subject: locale list for jumpstart Greeting, Does anyone know of a definitive list of locales for use with jumpstart? When we build systems we have to include all supported languages and I'd like to do this in a profile. I can get a list of the locales with 'locale -a' but a significant number of those get rejected during the system load with 'Could not select locale'. In addition I get a good number of 'Locale is already selected' messages. I did find the web site http://developers.sun.com/dev/gadc/tools/lc/lc.jsp which has a nice sortable list, but the format for some of locales is not acceptable for the jumpstart (e.g. hi_in from the web site is rejected but hi_IN.UTF-8 is accepted.) So in my case I could remove /var/sadm/pkg/SUNWglrt/save/120812-12. If I was sure that I did not want to back out the -14 patch I could also remove /var/sadm/pkg/SUNWglrt/save/120812-13. Be careful not to remove the directory itself. Thanks to Chris Buesgens, Oscar del Rio, Crist Clark and Anthony D'Atri. I get following errors: A) Boot device: /pci at 9,600000/SUNW,qlc at 2/fp at 0,0/disk at 0,0 File and args: The file just loaded does not appear to be executable. Most likely the mount of /usr failed or the /usr filesystem is badly damaged. The system is being halted. Either reinstall the system or boot with the -b option in an attempt to recover. At least "boot cdrom -s" can be executed now. Anyhow, do any of you guys know what might be the problem here as I need to repair this machine quickly? Of course, long-term solution is needed. I do not want to setup the whole system which would appear unstable afterwards. Thank you very much in advance for your efforts. I will summarize the solution/conclusion as soon as I have one. When we build systems we have to include all supported languages and I'd like to do this in a profile. I can get a list of the locales with 'locale -a' but a significant number of those get rejected during the system load with 'Could not select locale'. In addition I get a good number of 'Locale is already selected' messages. I did find the web site http://developers.sun.com/dev/gadc/tools/lc/lc.jsp which has a nice sortable list, but the format for some of locales is not acceptable for the jumpstart (e.g. hi_in from the web site is rejected but hi_IN.UTF-8 is accepted.) A summary of responses: 1. Use a JumpStart server to boot from the network 2. Install a SCSI CDROM/HDD 3. Use a boot server It was unfortunate that none of these options were available at the time. We solved the problem by creating a new JS server and re-installing the operating system, a somewhat drastic solution. However as luck would have it the owner on the box was planning a re-install anyway so we saved them the trouble. Once again many thanks to those who responded. How > do I get pkgrm to query the user for a y/n? The answer: I can't, really. From a backline engineer at Sun: *************************** The only place you can ask for input is in request. It is in place so that all packages are guaranteed to be able to be installed non-interactively (you can pre-supply the answers to the questions). You can ask a question in request pre-emptively, such as "If I find a name service, should I shut it down and remove it from the manifest?". Then you can export the variable there in the request script: echo "MANIFEST_REMOVAL=${my_value}" >> $1 This $1 is read later on by the other scripts. In postinstall, you can then check the value of the variable: if [ "$MANIFEST_REMOVAL" = y ]; then .... That's the only way I know how to do it. The disadvantage here is you might not know what questions to ask until later. Also note that you can supply default values for whatever custom variables you'd like in you pkginfo file. *************************** Thanks to: 1-800-USA-4SUN. +-----------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Christopher L. I believe that I made a false assumption of what the netmask *should* be, based on another server that turns out not to be on the same network. Thus, it appears to be my mistake. However, I rec'd a number of good suggestions. Most people said this hadn't changed from Solaris 9 to Solaris 10. It was also noted that I should have included examples - apologies, had trouble sanitizing info and hoped this was an easy and obvious change in Solaris 10. Comments included: * "I had the same problem and I fixed it by adding the netmask on the /etc/hostname.hme0 file. Here is an example: 10.10.10.10 netmask + broadcast + up" * Check the links from /etc/netmasks to /etc/inet/netmasks, and /etc/hosts to /etc/inet/hosts, and double-check syntax in files * Check the network number in /etc/netmasks * Make sure you have the same entries as /etc/hosts (sym link to /etc/inet/hosts) in /etc/inet/ipnodes. "Used to be for IPV6 only. Compulsory on Solaris 10 for IPV4, too, nowadays." * "I notice that Solaris 10 is very strict about network definition, e.g., we had an old definition like 10.241.132.0 255.255.255.0 ...which had worked before, but Sol10 rejected it because 10.241.132 isn't (strictly speaking) a network." Also, Matthew Stier provided this link, which verifies that this is indeed the case: http://chrismiles.info/unix/sun/dsraid10.txt -- Michael Hale mhale at transcomus.com _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers at sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers From Bernd.Schemmer at gmx.de Wed Jan 31 04:42:45 2007 From: Bernd.Schemmer at gmx.de (Bernd Schemmer) Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2007 09:42:45 +0000 Subject: SUMMARY: View status of power supplies of a Fujitsu Siemens PrimePower 650 In-Reply-To: <45BFBB0B.6010309@gmx.de> References: <45BFBB0B.6010309@gmx.de> Message-ID: <45C06495.8080103@gmx.de> Thanks to Andrey Borzenov, Remco Fugers and Hutin Bertrand.
