Hope it isn't OT. I'm trying to install VMware ESX 3.0.2 on a SunFire x2200 M2. This sun doc http://docs.sun.com/source/819-6601-15/index.html#0_76573 says that "The Sun Fire X2200 M2 now supports the VMWare ESX Server 3.0.2 operating system. The OS requires BIOS v3B17, which is available on the Tool and Drivers CD v1.5. You can only install VMWare on systems with the SAS option." Now, SF x2200 comes with SATA drives. So, what is this "SAS option" here? Has anyone been able to install ESX on an SF x2200 ? Is there a BIOS option to make the drives emulate SAS disks? Yes, I have upgraded the BIOS to version 3B17 but I still can't make the ESX 3.0.2 install CD see any disks. -------------------------------- I received two replies. Thanks go to: Sandor W. Sklar (at Sanford edu) John Malick (at Star Systems Eng.) --------------------------------- Even though Sun Fire x2200 M2 comes with SATA drives (Sun.com's "Buy" lists only SATA options) one can purchase SAS disks, a PCI card and cables. The full component list http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_private/Systems/SunFireX2200_M2/components.html shows PCI-E SAS HBAs (two options), SAS drives (146G, 300G) and SAS Hard Disk Drive Cable Kit. (Search for the word SAS in the above URL) Many thanks to Sandor Sklar for pointing this out. As for VMware, I have a service call open with VMware tech support to find out exactly what configuration is supported. I have not heard back yet. _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers at sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers From dreyerja at uni-paderborn.de Thu Oct 4 06:24:59 2007 From: dreyerja at uni-paderborn.de (Jan Dreyer) Date: Thu, 04 Oct 2007 12:24:59 +0200 Subject: SUMMARY: find/nfsfind failure ..Value too large for defined data type.. Dear Sun & Perl gurus, It is bit different track to ask any perl module installation question here but since it is more of dependency on OS package question hence I am daring to ask in this forum. :-) I am trying to install Text-CSV_XS-0.31 (Text::CSV_XS) module on my Solaris 10 server. Like any other module, I followed the same procedure and ended up with OS package related error. Could anyone please have a look at the error and let me know the possible cause of this error and how to correctly install this module without any problem. Needless to say that I am a newbie for perl but know and added modules in past without any such problem. I already google'd for this error without any luck. Thanks for your time. We are moving it from a non-segmented subnet (131.104.96.0) to an IP address (131.104.91.102) in a VLAN on the 131.104.91.0 subnet with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.224. Old netmasks file 131.104.96.0 255.255.255.0 New netmasks file 131.104.91.0 255.255.255.224 The subnet mask is correct for the VLAN. When I reboot the system after moving the ethernet cable to the new subnet, I find the following settings for the interface using ifconfig: IP address: 131.104.91.102 (correct) Netmask: 255.255.0.0 (not correct, should be 255.255.255.224) Broadcast: 131.104.255.255 (not correct, should be 131.104.91.127) I manually corrected the problem by issuing the following command for the interface eri0 after the system was rebooted ifconfig eri0 netmask + broadcast + This works, but I need these values set correctly when the system boots up. Any ideas? Is my syntax incorrect in the new /etc/netmasks file? Thanks - will summarise to the list. First, Sun has a hardware compability list at http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/ There is a section devoted to networking that currently has over 200 entries. The advice was to make sure the device is certified to work with Solaris. Confusingly, Sun also seems to have another site with hardware compability info: http://www.sun.com/io_technologies/ A few described specific copper ethernet NICs they were using such as Sun GigaSwift (qge and ce) interfaces. Here is a link to one: http://www.dmgi.net/Products/501-7415.html There are lots of third party vendors offering cards like that. Two folks were using SysKonnect (SKGE 98XX series was mentioned once.) Nobody who replied to me was using the built-in 1000Base-SX fiber interface. One reply said the fiber interface has support for jumbo frames which might be missing from a copper-based NIC. But, another said the fiber NIC (gem interface) required excessive CPU in order to drive it. I thank everyone for their advice. I plan on pursuing the plan laid out by Steve Edberg who told me about his success in using an Intel PRO/1000 MT Dual Port NIC in a V880 (Manufacturer Part# PWLA8492MT; $162 from Provantage.com) Solaris sees it as the e1000g interface. The advantage of the e1000g is that it is supported by the GLDv3 aka Project Nemo network driver framework. Ref: http://opensolaris.org/os/project/nemo/ Ref: http://blogs.sun.com/sunay/entry/the_solaris_networking_the_magic So, I could maybe use link aggregration (LACP) or IP multipathing (IPMP) to use both GigE interfaces the Intel card provides. I also have some newer AMD64 based Sun servers that also have the e1000g interface built in, so having the same interface in the V880 might make life easier. Getting link aggregation to work properly is something I have not been able to actually accomplish, though, and might be the subject of a future Sunmanagers question! In addition to Steve, thanks to Barry, Sandor, Scott, Francisco, Ric, Joe, Will and Tim. Regards, Doug Orginal message follows: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Managers, I have an old Sun V880 running Solaris. Up to this point, we have been using the built-in fast ethernet/100Base-T copper ethernet (which shows up as the eri0 interface with ifconfig.) I recently discovered that the V800 also comes with a built-in 1000Base-SX fiber ethernet interface (I had mistakenly assumed it was for connecting additional, external FC-AL disk drives.) I don't know anything about 1000Base-SX and have only used CAT-5 cables for ethernet. As far as I can tell, I would need to buy a GBIC SFP Transceiver (about $150) and fiber cable ($50 for 10ft!) in order to connect that port to our gigabit ethernet switch (a Linksys SRW-2048) These days, it seems that copper gigabit ethernet is cheap and everywhere. As much as I doubt it, could I just get a commodity PCI gigabit ethernet card ($20-$30 or so) and use it on the V880? If not, I guess Sun sells more expensive copper gigabit cards. My question is do you think it be cost effective to use copper or fiber based gigabit ethernet in this case? Does anybody use gigabit ethernet with V880s or Sun servers of that vintage? Any problems? Thanks for your advice. See original question below. But, I still haven't found a satisfying solution to the matter. We are still slowly watching the swap getting eaten away to nothing while the system claims to have 19 gigs of free memory. Output from top: Memory: 64G real, 19G free, 49G swap in use, 1269M swap free I've come to the conclusion with the help of you all that the reason `swap -s` tells me I have next to nothing for swap while `swap -l` tells me my swap space is untouched is due to tmpfs, and oracle writing too much to the /tmp directory. I'm a bit leary (to say the least) to limit the size of the tmpfs filesystem in vfstab because I'm not sure what Oracle will do when it runs out of tmp space. So I'm looking into expanding the swap space as a temporary solution but am first trying to learn the intricacy's of Veritas Volume manager which we use before I make any changes. There is always something ;) A few people mentioned that I should check my Oracle settings and Solaris Kernel parameters. I verified the settings we have against Oracle's and Solaris's recommended values and found that we appear to be setup correctly. One person mention that the shminfo_shmmax kernel paramter in /etc/system should at least be the sum of sga_max_size of all the oracle instances on the box but I found the below quotes in Oracle documentation that to me speak to the contrary. "A system global area (SGA) is a group of shared memory structures that contain data and control information for one Oracle database instance... Each instance has its own SGA." Again, thank you to everyone that helped me out and I'll post back if I find out any other useful info. We have been investigating that problem for a while and so far no real explanation has been found. From our own analysis we found a potential issue/bug with the libclntsh.so library from Oracle (10.2.0.2 and 10.2.0.3 for the version we have been using) that our software uses, something with the sslsshandler in that lib. When talking to Oracle the only feedback we got was regarding a bug in Oracle 8 (check for bug 2012268 on Oracle's side for more details). However, as mentioned earlier, we are running Oracle 10. We went back to Oracle 9 and the issue disappeared. When going back to Oracle 10, the issue came back. So we have now implemented the work-around suggested by Oracle (for Oracle 8) and adapted it for Oracle 10 and got a much better stability ... !? For the record: Before starting the process which performs dlopen/dlclose of a module linked with Oracle set the environment variable LD_PRELOAD to point to the libclntsh. so file that is being used. For example: setenv LD_PRELOAD $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib/libclntsh.so.8.0 This maps libclntsh permanently and avoids the core dump. This variable must only be set for programs that encounter the core dump. __ Regards, /Pascal Pascal Grostabussiat wrote: > Hi guys, > > I am puzzled by that issue and I have never seen such things happening > before. I then did a pkgrm on lpfc and added san foundation suite ( SFS drivers) I am not able to see the hba now with luxadm -e port command I could see two instances of emulex cards in /etc/path_to_inst "/pci at 1e,600000/fibre-channel at 2" 0 "lpfc" "/pci at 1e,600000/fibre-channel at 3" 1 "lpfc" I removed them and did a reconfiguration boot but still not luck. I have installed emladm utility, but its not detecting the cards. If i use emlxdrv > set_emlxs_all i get following ERROR: emlxs driver is not installed. I have tried to look for emlxs and concluded its only available for solaris 10. The following is the procedure to be followed: -upgrade the firmware on lpfc card to latest - remove HBAnyware (may be installed) - remove lpfc drivers - add SFS packages and patches ( download from sun.com 'SAN_4.4.13_install_it.tar' which has package and patches) - install EMLXemlxu (emladm utility) and switch drivers ( this may be required , however i did not used it) Note: in my particular case i was first not seeing the card thru luxadm -e port command. the reason for this was that i was missing SUNWemlx packages. Using the SFS from sun.com resolved this issue thanks Ayaz Anjum Systems Engineer , ITT/E6 Information Technology Department Qatar Petroleum P.O. With assistance from Sun we eventually tracked down that the problem was in the use of the Emulex FC card which is not supported on Solaris in a direct connection configuration. The Emulex card is only supported for use in a SAN. The solution was to purchase the Qlogic HBA FC card. I'm out of ideas and would appreciate some pointers. The 280R has been updated with latest patches. I have downloaded and installed the SAN 4.4 packages from http://www.sun.com/storagetek/networking.jsp (bottom of page) and installed the relevant patches as described in the documentation. I should add that the SE3511 is directly attached via fibre. A reboot -r followed by a probe-scsi-all shows me that the hardware connection seems to be ok: /pci at 8,700000/SUNW,emlxs at 3 Target none ALPA a3 WWPN 226000c0ffb925f8 LUN 0 Disk .. output trimmed... So it all looks good so far.. except that probe-scsi-all reports 'Target none'. Problem is when the system boots, 'format' doesn't see the LUNs. So I figured this points to an issue with the device drivers. However, if I do: "luxadm fcode_download -p" the only device that shows up is: Found Path to 1 FC100/P, ISP2200, ISP23xx Devices Opening Device: /devices/pci at 8,600000/SUNW,qlc at 4/fp at 0,0:devctl Detected FCode Version: ISP2200 FC-AL Host Adapter Driver: 1.12 01/01/16 Complete .. and this is attached to a A1000 disk array. The SUNW,emlxs device that probe-scsi-all found the SE3511 on doesn't show up. I don't understand how probe-scsi can detect the SE3511 but the HBA it's attached to doesn't show up for me to try updating firmware? I've read through various manuals and searched the lists for clues but I'm getting nowhere. If someone can suggest a way forward that would be very helpful. I will of course summarise. What BE does is read the file which changes its st_atime, then BE does a utime() to put back the original st_atime, which in turn changes st_ctime. Since BE runs as a daemon, you don't see any footprints in logs indicating anything "ran" when all the ctimes changed. A full backup using backup exec will alter the ctime on every file depending on directory lists in /etc/bkupexec/agent.cfg Newer versions of BE have an option to not do the utime(), but that means the access time of every file will change across a full backup." Original Question: We are running Solaris 9 on a number of servers. We run tripwire to monitor changes and check the integrity of the systems. On some of the servers, at a fairly regular interval, the inode modification time of (almost?) all files is updated, making the output from tripwire pretty useless. An example of the output is below: /usr/sbin/psrset st_ctime: Sun Oct 14 07:48:55 2007 Thu Sep 27 08:04:19 2007 ---> File: '/usr/sbin/psrset' ---> Update entry? [YN(y)nh?] bash-2.05# ls -lc /usr/sbin/psrset -r-xr-xr-x 1 root sys 12576 Oct 14 07:48 /usr/sbin/psrset I've checked the md5 of some of these files against the Sun fingerprint database, and they check out. There was nobody logged in at the time of the changes, and nothing running in cron (other than sar). Any suggestions as to why this is happening would be much appreciated! _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers at sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers From sudhi_4_u at yahoo.com Thu Oct 18 03:26:41 2007 From: sudhi_4_u at yahoo.com (Sudhir) Date: Thu, 18 Oct 2007 00:26:41 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [SUMMARY]: Configuring HP StorageWorks Dat 40 Tape Drive on Ultra 40 workstation. To: sunmanagers at sunmanagers.org Hi All, We had a request for connecting an HP DAT 40 Tape Drive to be connected to an Ultra 40 (x64) workstation. Since the workstation does not come with a standard SCSi card, we ordered a SCSI Ultra 320 Host Bus Adapter from SUN. The card is a LSI Logic card (LSI20320). On installation of the card and doing a reconfigure boot causes the system to hang. Even devfsadm command hangs for a long time. I then have to shut the system, remove the card and power on the machine. It then boots up fine. I initially thought it could be a problem with the card, and hence tried another of the same card which resulted in the same behavior. The Ultra 40(x64) workstation is loaded with Solaris 10 06/06 OS (118855-14 ). Has any one faced such a problem or has any idea how to debug the problem then please help. Suggestions included, -could be straight hardware issue (faulty sensor, bad solder joint or suchlike) -V880 is rather a "patch happy" machine, so make sure platform-specific patches and OBP are up-to-date -consider running a full OBP level system diagnostic to see if anything is flagged faulty there -setup more (cronned) self-monitoring to capture regularly what temp.status of system components are; observe if any correlation when/if there are future "weird temp reboot" incidents. Possibly the -50 is a buffer overflow from a real overtemp condition? In particular, I note that the machine hasn't had OBP patched since it was deployed. (OBP firmware on the system is date-stamped 2004, and the latest from sun is 2007) Just got downtime scheduled early today, flashed up the OBP and so far, so good. I've also setup crontabs to capture relevant snippets from "prtdiag -v" at regular time intervals. Given the sporatic nature of the crashing, I suspect I won't know much for at least a week. So I finally got this going, thanks for the many responses out of which I think Glen Carver's and Casper Dick's solutions looked promising. Finally it was Glen's solution that worked for me. Casper's solution was a little too cryptic to execute with my novice experience. Nevertheless in the process of trying his solution, I learnt how to reset the server using the ELOM CLI which was what finally made Glen's solution work for me. Here's what Glen suggested: Get to the Service processor Command and: SP> cd /SP/AgentInfo SP> set ConsoleMux=system SP> start console However for me, it did not work at first. I guess my console was already jammed with output going to ttya. Then after I learnt how to reset the server while tackling Casper's solution below, I decided to try the above steps again. This time with a reset like below SP> cd /SP/AgentInfo SP> set ConsoleMux=system SP> cd /SP/SystemInfo/CtrlInfo SP> set PowerCtrl=reset (this will reboot the server but not the SP) SP> cd /SP/AgentInfo SP> start console Once I got my host console back I could log in and the first thing I did was to # eeprom console=ttyb Then I followed Sun's document about about getting a serial console over LAN under: http://docs.sun.com/source/819-6588-13/intro.html#0_62503 I followed this document to the word and now all is fine. (See original question below.) Santhosh Valarani Mehran Salehi Hike Musa Williams Kim DeSmaele and especially Roberto Fratelli who provided me with the most detailed explanation. Original Question: "I'm getting ready to patch some Solaris boxes with Recommended patch clusters. The boot drives are using SVM in a mirror configuration. What I would like to do is metadetach one of each of the mirrors submirrors out of the configuration so if something goes wrong with the patching, I could boot off of the detached submirrors and then resync the other disks back into a configuration. Is this or something like this possible with SVM?" The answers I received were a resounding "Yes, you can do it." But here are the general instructions that Roberto Fratelli provided that I will be working off of. Here's an example : /dev/md/dsk/d10 > / filesystem /dev/md/dsk/d20 > /var filesystem /dev/md/dsk/d50 > swap The output of 'metastat -p' : d50 -m d51 d52 1 d51 1 1 c1t0d0s1 d52 1 1 c1t1d0s1 d20 -m d21 d22 1 d21 1 1 c1t0d0s5 d22 1 1 c1t1d0s5 d10 -m d11 d12 1 d11 1 1 c1t0d0s0 d12 1 1 c1t1d0s0 use 'prtconf -vp | grep bootpath' to find out which disk you booted off from. In my case, it was from /dev/dsk/c1t0d0. So we will need to detach the metadevices from c1t1d0. - Detaching the mirrors : # metadetach d10 d12 # metadetach d20 d22 # metadetach d50 d52 - Mounting the root filesystem from your mirror : # mount /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s0 /mnt - Edit /etc/vfstab entries to point to the disk slices, not the svm metadevices ( let's say, instead of /dev/md/dsk/d10 you put /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s0 ). - Edit /etc/system and comment out ( using an asterisk * ) the line starting with " rootdev:/pseudo/md " - Put your system in OBP and boot from the mirror disk ( on this example, c1t1d0 ) - Check if your system booted fine. If yes, bring it back to OBP and perform a normal boot ( from your regular boot disk) and do the OS patching. If you run in trouble with your recently patched OS, you can boot from your mirror. To continue off where Roberto left, if all goes well you can just metattach the devices back into the mirror and let them resync or if all doesn't go well you can boot off of the un-mirrored drives and recreate the SVM mirror configuration so the "other" sync off of your good drives.
