For creating targets I need SUNWiscistgtr and SUNWiscsitgtu. The solution is to upgrade my solaris environment to Solaris 10 8/07 which comes with the target. I am wondering if I should do that or download the target packages from http://opensolaris.org/os/project/iscsitgt/files/ which may get me the quicker solution. I will try this before I resort to upgrading the OS. Will be increasing the size of most filesystems 10x. (That's the point :).) The problem is the sparse files I know are scattered-about the source RAID box. I've been down this road before (just a few months ago, in fact). I've spent long hours messing with the problem. I can't recall ever finding a satisfactory solution. So: How best to copy everything from the 108GB RAID box to the 1TB RAID box, both attached to a Sparc Solaris 8 box, w/o expanding the holey files? (Obviously wish to retain ownerships, permissions, file modification dates, etc.) Suggestions (ordered by popularity, then alphabetically): ufsdump/ufsrestore: 9 cpio: 5 rsync: 4 GNU tar: 3 star: 3 dd: 1 GNU cp: 1 GNU cpio: 1 tar: 1 And one respondent pointed me to: http://www.unixguide.net/unix/sparse_file.shtml I know for a fact that neither the tar nor the cpio provided with Solaris 8 properly preserves the holeyness of sparse files. (I presume the same applies to pax [which nobody suggested, btw].) It's always been *my* understanding that dd is only appropriate if the drive geometry and partition sizes are identical between source and destination. I neglected to explicitly mention ACLs in my original question. Naturally, these need to be preserved, as well. There appears to be some question as to whether GNU tar and GNU cpio do so. My experimentation indicates GNU tar (v1.19, freshly built) does not. Also, rsync doesn't officially support ACLs until 3.x.x, and that's still in pre-release status. Conclusion: It would *appear* ufsdump/ufsrestore and star are the best bets. According to DBA, all the kernel parameters are met for oracle db. I was unable to find this particular issue with sun, but one that was close enough suggested booting in 32 bit mode with an eeprom boot=kernel/unix which made the symptoms go away. The error that pops up on the console during the cpio portion of the install_server script is bad_set_user_regs: HEXSTUFF; how can this happen?? Fun error with a great question. The suggested sun patch is already applied to 8/7, but booting into 32 bit mode works just fine. Thanks all for the help! My problem was, although I had done "touch /reconfigure", apparently that was not noticed since mounting of the root filesystem failed. So, I did "boot cdrom -s" at the OK, then fsck -y -F ufs /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0 mount /dev/dsk/c1t0d0s0 /mnt devfsadm -C -r /mnt halt boot -r and the system booted successfully. Probably the "boot -r" would have been sufficient. Since the source and target disks are identical, "dd" is sufficient to clone. If they were not identical, ufsdump/ ufsrestore plus installboot would probably be necessary. --Bruce (Bruce Hamilton, Redondo Beach, CA) bhami at pobox.com http://bhami.com/ At 10:02 PM 1/17/2008, Bruce A. The only answer that came up more than once was "Solaris doesn't like more than 64 heads." (I think I was just too tired and too wired last night for that to have sunk in.) So off to the office I went. I re-configured the Infortrend EonStor's host configuration to tell the host the array had 64 heads (cylinders ended-up somewhere around 36k and sectors ended-up 255, IIRC) and the problem was solved. No more "insufficient space in super block" messages from mkfs_ufs. As a bonus: No more "num sector(s) in last cylinder group unallocated" messages, either :). Fsck'd all the devices after newfs'ing them. Cloned a couple of the smaller filesystems over to the new array (using star) and re-fsck'd and ran a file-by-file compare between source and destination on one of them. All appears to be solid. One person pointed out that the native Sun LDAP client allows you to remap objectclasses/attributes. However, remapping memberUid to member doesn't work, as the latter is stored in DN format and the client doesn't know what to make of it. Another individual created a generic proxy account in his directory used by all systems to allow TLS. I don't particularly care for that approach, as access control generally distinguishes between "anonymous" and "authenticated" access, and such a generic account would blur the two. A third person is actually using PADL nss_ldap under Solaris 9 and is interested in switching to the native client due to support issues with Sun. On asking a similar question on the nss_ldap mailing list, a representative of Symas pointed out that they have successfully built and packaged pam_ldap and nss_ldap for Solaris 10. That's a commercial product though requiring licensing fees. I did some initial testing myself, and was able to get nss_ldap working compiled against the Sun LDAP libraries in plaintext, but not with TLS. At this point I guess I will fight a dual front of working on nss_ldap and also arguing with Sun technical support to try and get them to fix their product :)... Thanks... -- Paul B. This has helped - I still haven't got all the character support right, but I believe that that may be a result of running the serial session at the other end of an SSH connection from a UTF-8 terminal with the wrong font.... Anyway, picocom is giving me ANSI colour support over serial with a Dell server, which I've not managed to achieve with minicom. Others suggested just using vt100 or vt102 terminal emulation, and using a VT200 option during the installation. This can help during Solaris installs, but doesn't offer any assistance with BIOS screens. I'm still trying to improve things, with the idea being to manage all our servers (x86 and SPARC, Sun and non-Sun) via serial connections, so any further pointers would be appreciated, but things are definitely looking better..... :-) Mike _______________________________________________ sunmanagers mailing list sunmanagers at sunmanagers.org http://www.sunmanagers.org/mailman/listinfo/sunmanagers From dhanak at TechMahindra.com Thu Jan 24 00:37:12 2008 From: dhanak at TechMahindra.com (Dhanasekaran Krishnasamy) Date: Thu, 24 Jan 2008 11:07:12 +0530 Subject: C++ Memory Footprint Identification Message-ID: Dear, We are trying to reduce the memory footprint of a product. Message-ID: <47992272.20902@llnl.gov> Thanks to Gene Beaird for the simple suggestion. All I had to do was issue metareplace -e d5 c1t1d0s0 It seems that Disksuite thought that the mirror was out of sync and a metareplace put everything back in sink. Below is my original question: My 2nd. internal boot drive in my 280R is failing and needs to be replaced according to metastat command. Do I have to undo any of the mirrors on the affected disk first? Do I need to remove the state database from the bad drive first? The affected metadevice is d5 below but that disk is also part of other metadevices. Here is my plan. 1. Pull bad drive (2nd. internal) while system is up and running. 2. Install new drive. 3. Partition new drive to match the primary boot disk in the system now. 4. Issue this command: metareplace -e d5 c1t1d0s0 Do the above steps look correct or am I missing a step or two? Or should I shut the system down and then replace the bad drive? Thank You. Many thanks, --Tim Chipman ----ORIGINAL POSTING FOLLOWS----- Hi all, I have a small rather annoying problem, which I wonder if someone can recommend a solution, I've inherited recently the management of about a dozen Sun v60x dual-xeon servers running solaris 9 / x86 (see below for exact version info) I tend to like monitoring all my systems with NetSNMP (polled by Cacti) for "basic system resource use" (cpu, memory, disk, that sort of thing). I know that typically on the Solaris9 installer media CD set, there is a cd of "extra" software of "popular 3rd party" utilities, which typically includes a build of NetSNMP which installs easily and works out-of-the-box on the corresponding solaris install-revision. Alas the systems I've inherited have no install media anywhere which corresponds, and I'm unable to locate at Sun the file either. If anyone knows of possible online source for this package, it would be greatly appreciated. (I have already tried versions from SunFreeware and elsewhere, but the dependencies .. don't make me keen to install half a dozen other packages that I really don't want .. to get net-snmp up and running here.) Peter Dowling's answer was very much on target - using adb -k /dev/ksyms /dev/mem to check the parameters. I could check the parameters such as max_nprocs, npty but not hba0-xxxx etc. May be qla module doesn't reply those queries. Thanks Ketan -----Original Message----- From: sunmanagers-bounces at sunmanagers.org [mailto:sunmanagers-bounces at sunmanagers.org] On Behalf Of Patel, Ketan (IT/UK) Sent: 30 January 2008 17:32 To: sunmanagers at sunmanagers.org Subject: Retrieve the parameters for kernel module Gurus, Is there any way to find out what values are set for parameters of a particular module in kernel? To elaborate - HP branded Qlogic card configuration is set in /kernel/drv/qla2300.conf and the module is qla2300 in the kernel (obtained from modinfo). I want to know the values of parameters such as hba0-link-down-timeout, hba0-port-down-retry-count etc that are set in kernel. I can see the values from the file itself but the file has been modified and I want to make sure the values in kernel are indeed the values specified in qla2300.conf. One more reason to know this is - I would like to change and verify these parameters on the fly by using modunload and modload after making the changes to qla2300.conf.
