Looks like I should have known this, seems everyone else does.  Needed to 
insert the following into the /etc/netmasks file:

XXX.XXX.0.0     255.255.255.0

I have a Sparc 5 running 2.7 which I can't seem to get to keep a netmask 
of 255.255.255.0.  I built it yesterday and set netmask to 255.255.255.0, 
I've tried using ifconfig and boot -r (twice), and also did a 
sys-unconfig.  Netmask always get reset to 255.255.0.0.  Any ideas?
