Password clarification

Hello,
	I have to make NIS passwords expire for compliance with SOX. Reading up 
on passwords, I can use /etc/default/passwd to maintain MIN/MAX weeks 
and WARN for passwords. Does this apply to local and NIS passwords ? If 
not, how can I make NIS passwords expire ?
