problem with small root partition

Hello,
i have a too small root partition.
Unless I have a separate /tmp and /var/tmp as well when I isntall new 
patches sometimes
new stuff put into /etc makes my root being free space being smaller and 
smaller.

If I add a new SCSI disk, is it possible to copy all my / partition over 
the new disk and then
boot from that new disk ?

how to copy the boot blocks ?
is there a recipe to do it ?
