X2200 serial port access (dial out)

Thanks for your answers so far. You all suggested to check cabling. 
However, I am quite sure that the cable is fine. I tried the modem on a 
Sunblade 100 and it worked like a charm. I also tried the same cable 
and modem on a Sun Ray 2 (connected to the X2200) and it worked like a 
charm as well. It only does not work on the serial port on the back 
plane of the X2200. May be the port is dead or configured as a console 
or whatever. Google told me that others had the same problem on a X2200 
but no solution hill up and down. :-(

In the end we would like to connect the modem to a X4240. Unfortunately 
I have no physical access to this machine right now. That's why I did 
the check on a X2200 first which I have access to. Can anybody confirm 
that a modem connected to a X4240 will work as expected?
