I have been asked if there is such a thing as a:-
"Network Management Package" or "Network Cabling Package"
available for Suns or UNIX machines - PD or low-cost.
This is needed to keep a database of the ever-changing network
- ethernet, serial lines and X25.
What do other sites use? We currently use the back of an envelope.

I am one of Sun's net mgmt specialists. I don't have a PD solution and
SunNet Manager's $10K price tag might not be as low cost as you want
(though it is cheap compared to Accumaster or MOM). Actually, I'm responding
because I am interested in the answers you receive myself (I'm a big fan of
PD software) and would appreciate it very much if you would CC me in on
any good answers or summarize to the alias.

I believe there is something called SNMP (Simple Network
Management Protocol) available via anonymous ftp from
allspice.lcs.mit.edu 18.26.0.115
We are also looking into stuff from NyserNet. They have
an snmp implementation, but we had trouble getting it because
of source code licensing agreements.

SUN announced a SUN network managment tool with a OpenLook interface
Version 1.0, and I have seen it running on SUN EXPO EUROPE in the Hague NL
Don't know if it is cheap, probably not.

Hi,
We use a text file -- basically the in.named source file with
comments. (There are some auxillary files, like which cables
in our machine-room floor run to which machines -- very handy).
>From the in.named file, we can generate simple maps with Idraw,
or macpaint (not automatically, but updates are easy).

Cabletron offers a real nice PC package that integrates with their
Multimedia Access Center MAC, a LAN hub. It contains capabilities to
look at data transmissions at each port, etc but it also allows a network
manager to draw maps and the like of the network, and offers nice features
for viewing the maps.
I would think even without their MAC hardware the package would still allow
you to use the documentation features less the electrical analysis.
The package sells for about $5K I think. They also have plans for a
Sun/UNIX based package for very large network in the $30K range.
I would recommend that you at least make sure that your envelope is electronic.. :)
